Why Teach ?
Is it a family tradition ? Were you motivated by a teacher who changed your life ?
Growing up I have always been surrounded by teachers in my family or people who worked in the school district. Starting with my grandparents, my grandmother was a special education teacher and my grandfather drove school buses. My mom has been an educator ever since I was born, she started off as a substitute then went on to get her teachers certification to also becoming an special education teacher. She continued to work her way up in the education world and now she is a counselor at an elementary school. And I have many cousins that are educators also. But when I got in middle school teachers would ask what did I want to do as a career when I got older. Even though I had a lot of educators in my family, teaching was not my first option. I have always loved fashion, dressing up, and decorating things, so I just knew I was going to do something in the fashion industry. But as I got in high school reality started to hit me and even though I had a passion for fashion I wondered what would I do in the fashion industry.
When I got in my junior year of high school, I was placed in the teachers career classes because I like kids and I thought it would be pretty cool to go to the elementary schools. My teacher over the course was Ms.bates and she was one of the best people that I could have ever met in my life. I talked to her about my career choices, so she could give me some advice and she gave me the idea of doing a career pathway class that teaches about fashion and the history behind it. Once I got in my career, so I want to do that for a while, then I started going to the elementary schools for one class period everyday. And I instantly fell in love with helping the kids with anything they wanted. From that day on I knew I was destined to be an elementary teacher. The job is so rewarding and the excitement I get every time I step into an elementary school is indescribable because I know that I get to make a difference in every child’s life that I come across.
After I figured what way I wanted to head in my career, it was time to figure out which grade levels I wanted to teach. I have aLways loved 1st and 2nd graders from the time I was in first and second grade til now because this is where I started to have a favorite teacher especially in 2nd grade. I still remember my 2nd grade teacher her name was Mrs, Davis, she was the first teacher to have an impact on my life because she was always kind, very sweet, never got frustrated, and made her students feel like her own kids. When I started substituting at the beginning of this year I instantly fell in love with 3rd grade reading and math because they aren’t too young but not too old. This was the best grade that I substitute for and since I grew up in a big city (Dallas) I have always wanted to teach in a area that I was taught in. Ever since I knew that I wanted to become an educator I have always had a passion for being their for my students every single day and making a difference in their lives because that’s what my teachers throughout the years did for me. I want to make learning fun to where students forget they are at school because they are having so much fun and excited about learning.
This is at my second high school graduation with my favorite teacher Ms. Bates and one of my classmates.

Hi Mackenzie,
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I just love the photo you posted of the wonderful Ms. Bates and you. Love it. She seems amazing from your description of her. Your story of your path is pretty neat. You can name so many wonderful reasons about why you want to teach.
