Evaluating lesson plan
The lesson plan I chose for this weeks discussion is the “Using picture books to explore identity, stereotyping, and discrimination”. The lesson plan is over three picture books depict characters that are different from others in their communities. The objective states that sixth- through eighth grade students are challenged to analyze these concepts through class discussions and writing. In addition to filling out a chart identifying how these three concepts are dealt with in each book. After students understand some of the causes of discrimination, they discuss concrete actions they can take to stop it. The students will be doing different types of activities such as “ print a copy of yourself of introduction of concepts: Answer sheet, comparative analysis: Teacher guide, and the identity, stereotypes, and discrimination chart: Teacher reference. And the students will be asked to share examples of discrimination they have experienced, seen, or heard of. Encourage as many students as possible to participate. I love that this lesson plan has a lot of opportunities for students to express their own ideas and opinions on the assignments and learn about other students identity. This lesson also gives students different times to interact with one another and have class discussions on the topic. And last I like how you can keep introducing this lesson plan in different times throughout the school year to keep reminding the students of these important things that are going on around us. I don’t think I would change anything about this lesson because it goes into great detail about identity, stereotypes, and discrimination.
Hi Mackenzie! I agree that this lesson is great for student collaboration. This lesson requires the students to be engaged and have class discussion. I think when the students actually have a conversation about a rather serious topic like identity, stereotyping, and discrimination, they will really gain so much knowledge and be informed. I also think it is great to bring this topic of discussion again throughout the school year to have the students realize that it is important
