Picture books

The picture book I chose for this week is " Grandpa, Is Everything Black Bad ?"  by Sandy Lynne Holman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GLCReDjvrU I love reading this book by Sandy Lynne Holman because it teaches the little boy in the book named Montsho that everything black isn't bad and he learned about his heritage. The book starts off by the little boy saying all the things that are black that represent sadness or darkness and ask his grandpa is everything Black bad then he ask himself since I am Black too does that make me bad ?. The boy is questioning his own identity because everything that represents black to him is bad and he doesn't know if that makes him bad too or how others look at him as being bad. His grandpa explains to him that it isn't about the color of your skin that makes you bad or good but it what's inside of their hearts that counts. This book teaches the child about his heritage and where he comes from to make him feel comfortable in h...

Evaluating lesson plan

The lesson plan I chose for this weeks discussion is the “Using picture books to explore identity, stereotyping, and discrimination”. The lesson plan is over three picture books depict characters that are different from others in their communities. The objective states that sixth- through eighth grade students are challenged to analyze these concepts through class discussions and writing. In addition to filling out a chart identifying how these three concepts are dealt with in each book. After students understand some of the causes of discrimination, they discuss concrete actions they can take to stop it. The students will be doing different types of activities such as “ print a copy of yourself of introduction of concepts: Answer sheet, comparative analysis: Teacher guide, and the identity, stereotypes, and discrimination chart: Teacher reference. And the students will be asked to share examples of discrimination they have experienced, seen, or heard of. Encourage as many studen...

Evaluating teaching ideas and picture books on identity

As I was doing my research on the different books one book that caught my eye was the book “The day you begin by Jacqueline Woodson”. I really like this book because it can teach children a lot about themselves and others and how every child shares similar stories with one another. It says the author Woodson wants to remind us that we are all outsiders and it takes courage to be ourselves and I can connect to this book because I can remember when I was trying to find my identity when I went to a new school in 6th grade. And was trying to find my way it was really hard at first not knowing anyone but I eventually found my identity as I started to open up and got to know the other students in my class. The book does invite students to think about how to express pride, confidence ,and healthy self- esteem by talking about different character traits, emotion changes, and how to be comfortable in their own skin without denying the value and dignity of other people. The two instructiona...

My Identity Self protrait

Image
A person's identity is shaped by many different aspects in their life. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence in a person's life at all. As for I there are many things and people in my life that has shaped me into the person I am today, my friends, family, culture, experiences, the latest fashion trends, etc. These are some of the factors that makes me who I am today and as I continue to grow and experience many more things in this world my identity will continue to change. At this point in my life I will say I get my identity from experiencing the college life and having to learn how to balance my life back at home with my life at school. And also while trying to figure out how to manuever through this world as an adult at such a young age, It has pushed me to explore and learned new things that has made me have a different outlook on my life.  I believe everybody has more than one identity, for instance my family sees a d...
